Carstensz Pyramid: Climb the highest peak in Oceania via remote helicopter access into the heart of Papua.
What to ExpectAt 16,024 ft / 4,884 m, Carstensz Pyramid is the highest mountain in Oceania and one of the most unique objectives in the Seven Summits. Unlike other peaks in the list, Carstensz is a technical rock climb in a remote equatorial alpine environment, requiring fixed-line ascension, exposure tolerance, and efficient movement over steep terrain.
❋ Structured, Guided Team SupportClimbers are supported by an experienced local guide team managing route conditions, fixed lines, and summit strategy. The structure is designed to ensure safe, efficient movement on the mountain while adapting to real-time conditions.
❋ Full-Service Expedition SupportFrom arrival in Timika to base camp operations and summit logistics, everything is coordinated for you. You’ll climb with an experienced local guide team managing route conditions, fixed lines, and summit strategy—so you can focus on moving confidently and efficiently.
❋ Built for Remote LogisticsThis expedition is defined by access. Helicopter transport, weather windows, and regional operations all play a role in how the climb unfolds. The itinerary is intentionally structured with flexibility and contingency time built in, allowing the team to adapt to conditions rather than force movement in a highly unpredictable environment.
❋ Movement Preparation Built InTime at base camp is used to review movement systems, including fixed-line ascension and descent, footwork, and efficiency on the route. This ensures that all climbers are prepared for summit day and able to move safely and confidently on technical terrain.
❋ A Technical Climb, Not a TrekCarstensz Pyramid is a true alpine objective. The route involves steep rock, exposure, and fixed-line travel. While it does not require advanced rock climbing grades, it does require comfort with a harness, rope systems, and controlled movement in exposed terrain.
❋ Flexible Summit & Flight StrategyAll movement on this expedition is condition-dependent. Helicopter access, weather patterns, and mountain conditions dictate timing for both summit attempts and travel in and out of base camp. Decisions are made conservatively, prioritizing safety and maximizing the likelihood of a successful outcome.

Start HereWho This is For
This expedition is designed for climbers who are ready to step into technical alpine terrain in a remote environment.
This is a strong fit if you:
Have prior high-altitude trekking or mountaineering experience
Are comfortable with exposure and steep terrain
Have used (or are willing to learn) basic rope systems
Can stay composed in wet, cold, and unpredictable conditions
Are adaptable and patient when logistics change
This is not a good fit if you:
Are looking for a non-technical or purely hiking objective
Have no experience with exposure or scrambling
Struggle with uncertainty or changing plans
Prepare FirstFitness & Preparation
Carstensz is not long, but it is demanding in a different way.
Success depends on movement efficiency, control, and composure, not just endurance.
You should be able to:
Move continuously for 10–12 hours on summit day
Hike uphill at altitude with a light pack
Scramble on steep rock using hands and feet
Maintain balance and control in exposed terrain
Recover quickly in a base camp environment
Training should focus on:
Aerobic base (hiking, uphill movement)
Core stability and balance
Grip strength and upper body engagement
Movement over uneven terrain
Comfort in wet and variable conditions
We provide pre-trip guidance on training, gear, and preparation so you arrive with a clear, executable plan.
Whats Not Included
International airfare to and from Indonesia
Indonesian visa fees and associated costs
Personal travel insurance (medical, rescue, evacuation, trip interruption)
Personal climbing gear and equipment
Meals in Timika outside of the welcome dinner (lunches and dinners)
Optional cultural day trip to local Papuan communities via boat
Any additional personal expenses (snacks, tips, etc.)
We provide support and guidance for all of the above to ensure a smooth experience.
FAQ
-
You do not need to be an advanced rock climber, but you should be comfortable with exposure, scrambling, and using fixed lines. Prior experience with a harness and basic rope systems is strongly recommended.
-
Yes—but not in the same way as other Seven Summits. The challenge is technical movement, exposure, and remote logistics rather than pure altitude or endurance.
-
Typically 8–12 hours round trip from base camp, depending on conditions and pace.
-
Delays are common. You should expect flexibility in both entering and exiting base camp. Contingency days are built into the itinerary, but additional delays are always possible.
-
No. Weather, helicopter access, and mountain conditions all play a role. Safety and conditions determine all decisions.
-
For some climbers, yes—but only if they are comfortable with exposure and basic technical movement. It is not a beginner mountain.
-
You will need full personal climbing equipment, including a harness, helmet, and appropriate clothing systems for cold, wet alpine conditions. A detailed packing list will be provided.
-
Helicopter operations depend on weather and visibility. It is common for schedules to shift by multiple days.
Important Notes
Helicopter & Weather Reality
Access to Carstensz Pyramid is entirely dependent on helicopter transport.
Helicopter flights:
Operate by visual flight rules only (clear visibility required)
Fly in the morning only
Are prioritized around regional logistics, including supply drops to remote communities across Papua
Because of this—and due to the highly variable equatorial weather patterns and frequent rainfall—delays are common.
It is normal for:
Flights into base camp to be delayed by multiple days
Return flights from base camp to Timika to be delayed by multiple days
All international flights should either:
Be booked after returning to Timika
Or be fully flexible and changeable without penalty
Access to the Mountain
The traditional jungle approach route has been closed indefinitely.
The helicopter approach is currently the only viable and permitted way to access Carstensz Pyramid.
